Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) occurs because of the destruction of myelin, the protective covering for nerves of the brain and spinal cord. The condition often fluctuates between relapses and periods of remission. Symptoms include:
- Disturbances in vision
- Abnormal sensations
- Muscle weakness
- Clumsiness
Globally, the highest incidence of MS is in Canadians. MS occurs in women at least 2-3 times more often than men, and the age of onset typically ranges between 15-40 years old. Medical treatments can include a variety of medications that are aimed at controlling the immune system and managing symptoms. Conversely, Naturopathic treatments seek to balance the immune system through:
- Acupuncture and Asian medicine
- Botanical medicine
- Diet counselling
- Heavy metal chelation
- Hormone regulation with either botanical medicine or bioidentical hormones
- Hydrotherapy
- Lifestyle counselling
- Low-level laser therapy
- Nutraceuticals
Because MS is a progressive disease, treatment is typically ongoing. With continued care, the expectation is to support medical treatment in further slowing the progression of the disease, and prolonging periods of remission.
