Graves’ Disease

Graves’ disease is the most common form of hyperthyroidism. It is caused by an autoimmune reaction against the thyroid that results in continuous secretion of thyroid hormone. Symptoms include:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Arrhythmias
  • Feeling hot
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shaky hands
  • Nervousness and anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Frequent bowel movements
  • Goiter
  • Bulging eyes

Graves’ disease typically affects women between the ages of 20-40 years. Medical treatment aims to reduce the production of thyroid hormone and its effect on the tissues through the use of radioactive iodine, antithyroid medications, beta blockers and surgery. Alternatively, Naturopathic medicine seeks to identify the underlying trigger(s) that promote the autoimmune reaction, as well as manage the symptoms through evidence-based natural therapies. This is accomplished through:

  • Asian medicine
  • Botanical medicine
  • Diet counselling
  • Hormone regulation with either botanical medicine or bioidentical hormones
  • Lifestyle counselling
  • Nutraceuticals

The duration of treatment is typically 3 months. In many cases, Naturopathic Medicine can help achieve remission without the need for medical interventions.
